Is hypothyroidism a possibility?

I don’t have my doctor’s appointment til June 4th, but I want to know if my symptoms fit in with hypothyroidism or if it would be a stretch. I definitely have a suspicion that I have a metabolic problem — I’ve been gaining weight at a scary rate (15 pounds just in the last month), even though I’m not pregnant, I exercise, and I don’t eat that much. I’m in a brain fog most of the time, I’m always tired and can sleep up to 14 hours in a day on occasion, and the skin on my hands gets painfully dry. I often have somewhat of a headache, too. I know something’s wrong, but does hypothyroidism fit the bill?
Also, I’m 18, so there shouldn’t be any age-based metabolic slowing going on.

Yes, your symptoms are consistent with a slowing thyroid. Some of these symptoms could also be attributed to problems other than hypothyroidism. For thyroid performance a simple blood test can be performed. It’s not unusual for younger people to develop thyroid problems. If that is the problem you will need your doctor (GP) to recommend you to an endocrine specialist.

If hypothyroidism presents, treatment usually consists of a thyroid supplement that you will take once a day for the rest of your life. It’s not a big deal, but the medication can be expensive. It might be a good idea to make sure you have health insurance and a good drug plan in place before you see the doctor. It will be more expensive after you have been diagnosed, because you will have to disclose the condition!

One symptom that you did not describe would be mood swings. For instance people with slowing thyroids often have a problem in their relationships which, untreated, can lead to divorce.

The dry skin is more consistent with simple advancing age. It could be treated with lotions or if extreme cortisone cream. Since you are only 18, you’ll need to ask your doctor about that.

I’m not a doctor so this should all be confirmed by a professional. Hopefully this will ease your mind.

If your condition is caught early enough, there maybe some holistic approaches to treatment that are open to you. Immediately try to evaluate your diet and see if there are foods that are better/worse for hypothyroidism. Try Googling the subject and look up all the links.

I feel rotten and I don’t know why =(
-tired (constatnly - even after tonnes of sleep)
-weak
-headaches
-dizzy spells sometimes
-brain fog

The doctor didn’t take my symptoms too seriously, I had a blood test over a year ago which was all normal, so she assumes it still is.
It was thought I was feeling like this because of stress (I’m 16 and just finished exams so that seemed reasonable) but I’ve had these symptoms for months and am on holidays now - no change.

I think you should go back to the doctor and demand a MRI. It could be something serious. You shouldn’t feel this crappy for so long….
I hope everthing is ok…good luck to you

and p.s.
don’t let the doctors jerk you around either! It is your life.

About 5 days ago, i suddenly found myself with a fever of about 102 to 104, chills, sweats, some cough, no congestion but i feel like im drunk, dizzy or have constant brain fog. Fatigue. Muscle spasms at times too and headache. Has anyone ever had this?

Sounds like flu. Check with doc.

I have not been well in a few months and here are some things that have been going on and Im not really getting an answer from my doctor. In March I went to the ER with arm and chest pain(exactly like I feel now) The doc said my heart was alittle bit out of rythum because my pottassium was low and my oxygen was alittle low and they gave me ogygen and pottassium and sent me home. In April I started having brain fog a horrible headache hearing and visual problems and more,They did a Lumbar puncture and said it was probably a migraine and sent me home,I couldnt raise my head for over 2 weeks..I have felt extreme weakness and fatigue and not right!Since march..I also have had a lump under my jaw and swollen lymph nodes for a year in the past couple of months it has gotten bigger and painful I also have night sweats on my neck and chest sometimes..I got both of my E R reports and the first one said my EKG borderline and my chest xray mild compression atelectasis. Now its back.PLEASE HELP!

Sounds somewhat like what ive been through for 9 years now.. i’m only 22 and the doctar tell me i "just want the drugs" and to sleep it off. the drugs my ass! i come from a family of lawyers and could not possible be more responsible. i just want someone to take me seriously and FIX whatever it is thats wrong… you need to keep going to doctors. dont take no for an answer, only you know whats going on with youre body. there has GOT to be a doctor out there to help you, but he wont find you on his own - its up to you.. so chin up and do your research! keep reading things online and asking for advice, and never stop going to the doctors until they help you.. i know this isnt much help, but just know you arent alone and everything will work out eventually as long as you dont give up. take care of yourself!
